INVITATION LUNCH

At the start of each Summer, the Club holds an Invitation Lunch for its members and their guests.  This year the lunch took place on Wednesday June 19th at Worthing Indoor Bowls Club, which is set in the glorious gardens of Field Place.

As pre-booking was required, some time had passed and Members  were counting down the days before lunch.  The weather prior to the day rained and the wind howled, what a soggy start to the week. Suddenly on Wednesday morning the clouds parted, the sun shone and the appointed day was fine, warm, and sunny.

Members and guests donned suits or summer dresses. What a wonderful start to the day!  As is the custom, all the participants were greeted by David Gibbs the Dining Officer and David Botting, the President.  On arrival, prize draw tickets were available – these served two purposes – the holder’s table number was on the front and the draw number on the back.  Tickets were also issued for a complimentary pre-lunch drink at the well-stocked bar. As always, the lunch, provided by Chevron Catering, was excellent, served promptly, and cheerfully.   The chef and team excelled themselves once again, and the meal was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Prior to dining, there was time to socialise which enabled some “catch-up” time. During the meal a quiz sheet based on the logos of chocolate bars was given to each table for completing (and head scratching!). There were eighteen pictures to identify, but nobody was able to answer all the questions, even so, it was a lot of fun.   All too soon the afternoon came to an end, and we left in glorious sunshine, in good spirits and comfortably full.

SHUFFLEBOARD AND TEA

To mark the start of Probus’s Autumn season, the Club held a Shuffleboard afternoon for members and guests.   The same event last year was extremely popular, and this year proved to be the same.

Despite the atrocious weather there were thirty competitors all keen to try their hand at this great game.  The event was organised by the owner of The English Shuffleboard company from Hove.

Shuffleboard has existed in England for over five hundred years and was greatly enjoyed by Henry V111. The game is played by sliding discs along a narrow board and knocking them through gaps to score points.

The players were divided into teams of three competitors. There were thirty of us playing and so there were ten teams.  We were then subdivided into two groups numbered A or B. Each group composed of five teams. At first it seemed rather complicated, but everyone soon understood what they had to do!

To avoid any arguments the score of each group was checked by a member of the other groups.  If there were any disputes the organiser of the game acted as adjudicator.

The game proved to be a great deal of fun and soon we had reached the point where there was a break for refreshments.  We all enjoyed the delicious array of sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls and glorious desserts. Particular favourites were Lemon Drizzle Cake and Strawberry and Cream scones.

All too soon the afternoon came to an end and all agreed that we had thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The eventual team winners called themselves “The Bell Ringers.” The success of the tournament was, of course, due to the event being very well organised. Thanks must go to David Gibbs, our Dining officer, who arranged the games, The English Shuffleboard Co. and the wonderful lady who provided the refreshments and copious cups of tea and coffee.
